Jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis) is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, but it is not a true oil, rather a "liquid wax". Unlike other seed oils which also contain glycerin (triglycerides) in their molecule, jojoba oil lacks glycerin and consists of a linear, unbranched molecule. This may explain why it is easily absorbed by the skin and can penetrate through the small pores of the epidermis and the interstitial spaces of the dermis.

Unlike all other vegetable oils, jojoba oil's chemical composition is very similar to human sebum. Therefore, a significant portion of the oil and its esters, isopropyl, and alcohol derivatives are used in cosmetics and personal care products, especially for skin and hair. It also contains tocopherols (powerful natural antioxidants), vitamin F, and minerals.
